Module description

This module offers the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to manage product development projects in international business environment, with particular focus on product design methodologies and project management techniques.

The module focuses both on the hard side of managing global product development projects, referring to time/resource management and business/marketing analytics with spreadsheet modelling, as well as the soft issues such as idea generation/selection and teamwork that must be dealt with in order to ensure success of the product development projects. The module covers the core principles of global managing product design and development and the key elements required to bring projects to successful fruition.

Module aims

The focus of Global Project Management is the integration of the marketing, design, engineering, and manufacturing functions of the firm in creating a new product. The module is intended to provide you with the following benefits:

1. Competence with a set of tools and methods for global project management

2. Confidence in your own abilities to create a new project for the international business

3. Awareness of the role of multiple functions in creating a new product (e.g. strategy, marketing, finance, industrial design, engineering, operations, environmental safety)

4. Reinforcement of specific knowledge from other courses through practice and reflection in an action-oriented setting

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Obtain a critical understanding of principal theoretical approaches to and concepts of managing global product development projects in businesses and organisations

2. Critically evaluate possible operational challenges faced by managers, professionals, and stakeholders in business organisations

3. Obtain a critical understanding of the impact of project management and product development processes in everyday life, and develop a critical understanding of applying project management and product development principles in the light of wider issues in contemporary business and management practice

4. To be able to communicate concepts and research to different communities and stakeholder groups

5. Develop a critical understanding of project management and product development principles for managing and developing business processes effectively in different organisational contexts (

Learning and teaching methods

The lectures introduce the students to project management techniques, project systems thinking, quantitative analysis, and relevant theory discussion. Class activities are aimed at demonstrating the application of the concepts in contemporary business practices, often by means of computer software application in project decision making. Students are required to complete exercises, sometimes individually, sometimes in groups, prepare in class presentations, and actively participate in and contribute to the class discussions. Experience shows that students who have a good understanding of the class material perform significantly better in assessment. In addition to these contact sessions, student learning will be supported through Moodle and other media links.
