Module description

This module explores the role of digital HRM and people analytics in organisations today. The module will examine the development and evolution of digital HRM technologies, including AI applications that supports the implementation and use of People Analytics in organisations.


The module will examine ways in which digital technologies collect organisational and people data and tools and techniques for analysing the data. Students will be introduced to strategies for measuring people performance and other people analytics functions. The module will also address important ethical questions and dilemmas that emerge from the use of digital HRM and people analytics in organisations today, including their sustainability credentials. These issues will be foregrounded when examining how people data collected through digital tools is used and applied for decision making in organisations today. The importance of consulting employees and end users on technology-enabled solutions will also be examined on the module.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To assist students to develop an applied understanding of the role of digital HRM data collection tools and people analytics in organisations today.

  • To enable students to examine the origins and evolution of digital HRM and apply key techniques and principles of people analytics.

  • To provide students with an understanding of the ethical, regulatory and risks associated with the effective adoption and implementation of digital HRM and people analytics.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Identify current and emerging HRM technologies and how they impact the work of HR professionals.

  2. Identify systems for collecting different data sources available in organizations.

  3. Understand how different types of data can be used and presented to resolve people issues.

  4. Calculate basic measures of work and people performance.

  5. Understand and apply the four types of evidence used in decision-making and how to identify sources of evidence.

  6. Apply data visualization techniques that can be used to engage and influence others.

  7. Understand the ethical and regulatory issues associated with the use of people analytics and the importance of giving a voice to end user when designing solutions.

Learning and teaching methods

The module will be delivered via:

  • One 2-hour workshop per week. 

The workshops will weave together methods involving some lecturing, some prompted responses to questions, and some structured discussion. All methods of teaching and learning will be as inclusive as possible. Guest speakers and real world case studies will also be built into the workshops.
