Module description

The module ‘AI in Organisations and Society’ critically examines the profound impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on contemporary organisations, societies, and global systems. As AI continues to reshape various sectors of industry and communities, this module provides an in-depth understanding of its implications on changing organisational and socio-political structures, the future of work, public service delivery, media and socio-political structures. For example, students will explore the intersections of AI with labour markets, platform economies, employment, welfare delivery, political movements, social order, media communications and sustainability practices. Students will evaluate the opportunities AI technologies provide, while engaging in critical debates about exclusion, bias, misinformation, and surveillance. The module will offer students a theoretical knowledge base on the different kinds of AI applications and their usage in practical management, business and societal contexts. Through lectures, case studies, and drawing on a variety of teaching resources, this module equips students with the skills to critically assess AI’s role in transforming organisations and society, preparing them to engage with these emerging challenges as future leaders and change agents.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To provide students with an in-depth understanding of the multifaceted role of artificial intelligence (AI) in transforming contemporary organisational structures and socio-political systems.

  • To explore AI’s impact across diverse sectors; including workforce, HR practices, public sector services, media, society and environment.

  • To promote understanding of AI’s role in creating opportunities, whilst recognising the challenges and risks it poses on different sectors across global, national and community levels.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to: 



  1. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of AI’s role in transforming organisational, political and societal practices.

  2. Identify the different types of AI technologies used in contemporary businesses/management, and critically examine their influence in automating different industrial sectors, private and public organisations and communities.

  3. Evaluate the opportunities and benefits in leveraging AI applications, but also assess the challenges and risks they pose on oragnisations and society.

  4. Propose and design ethical frameworks that help to mitigate the risks of AI at organisational and societal levels, locally and globally.

After completing this module students should have:



  1. Developed their technical/ digital skills through the use and application of Microsoft Office, Power Point, Excel and Outlook.

  2. Enhanced their writing skills; critical writing, reflection, argument building through evaluating case studies.

  3. Developed their research capabilities through searching for academic literature, industrial sources and analysing secondary data sources (documents, reports); exercising a range of research skills and methods.

  4. Enhanced data analysis and presentation skills related to critical inquiry based assessment methods.

  5. Enhanced their problem-solving skills related to designing solutions and recommendations for business.

  6. Enhanced their project management, leadership and time management skills through the ability to work in teams and independently.

  7. Recognised the global, national and local relevance of AI and ethical considerations in the specific management/ business context..

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via: 

  • 3 hour lectures with integrated seminars x 10 weeks
  • Academic Support Hours of Tutors
  • Independent Study by Students
  • Guidance on Moodle Page/TALIS reading list

Students will be able to enhance their learning through a range of key reading materials, including journal articles, case studies, reports, learning platforms, such as Moodle and Talis reading lists. In preparation of the session, students are expected to have undertaken the relevant readings to participate and engage in discussions on the topic in class.
