Module description

This module will explore the main approaches and practices within social economy enterprises and organisations.


The module will provide an overview of the key skills and management practices, including leadership, social entrepreneurship and governance, involved in running and supporting social enterprises. It will examine a range of different social enterprise organisations and structures through contemporary examples and case studies, enabling students to appreciate and understand the diversity of the social enterprise sector. The module will also outline the creation and assessment of value generation and impact within the social economy.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To equip students with an understanding of the main practical perspectives for managing and maintaining a social economy enterprise.

  • To critically understand core components of social economy management including leadership, governance, and financial sustainability.

  • To examine the use of evidence-based for creating a social economy based strategy.

  • To explore how a social economy approach can be successfully promoted and implemented within local and regional business environments.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the core practical knowledge for creating and maintaining a social economy enterprise.

  2. Critically evaluate different types of social economy initiatives and their appropriateness across diverse contexts.

  3. Apply the use of evidence for the promoting, implementing, and sustaining a social economy enterprise.

  4. Exhibit knowledge of the multiple factors involved in planning and evaluating the success of a social economy enterprise to a wide-range of relevant stakeholders.

  5. Develop skills for concretely engaging in a social economy enterprise.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • One 2-hour lecture per week; and
  • One 1-hour seminar per week.

Students will be able to enhance their learning through a range of supplementary learning technologies – including an online project collaboration tool developed by one of the teachers on the module Professor Peter Bloom and a board game developed especially for social economy PGT courses by a funded Erasmus project (of which our Group is a key partner).
