Module description

The module enables students to acquire a critical understanding of theories and practice of human resource management in the international context. The course helps to identify the impact of internationalization processes on human behaviour within organisations from an international perspective, explore key aspects of human resource management in multinational firms; understand cross-cultural dimensions of international management, and comprehend trends and challenges in the global work environment.

Module aims

The main aim of the module is to enable students to acquire a critical understanding of the process of recruiting and allocating human resources and their management in the international context, including the training and development needs, performance measurement, appraisal systems, recruiting talent and global leaders, developing cross-cultural understanding in the management of business process and people at work, and the management of diversity. The student will examine HRM policies and regulations in different countries and to apply them with reference to the specific nature of companies and businesses.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students should be able to:

Understand and appreciate the need for good international HRM practices that are appropriate to the context in which they occur;

Appraise the importance of cultural awareness and how cross-cultural factors influence HRM practices, and obtain critical understanding of the value of cultural diversity in an organisation

Analyse and evaluate critically the impact of internationalization and globalization on international HRM practices and approaches, and critically review HRM practices in a range of countries,.

Analyze and understand the challenges for international HRM including international business ethics, mode of operation, ownership issues and future trends in the field of IHRM.

Develop practical skills in comparing and contrasting different theoretical and practical approaches to leading and managing people in the international context and develop key skills in oral and written communication, use of IT, problem solving, and improving own learning & performance

Learning and teaching methods

The following learning and teaching methods will inform the pedagogic process of the course: Lectures; Seminars (for discussion of case studies, journal articles, presentations) Group work; Class exercise; Tutorials; Signposting to additional resources - The lectures (structure on page 6) will be developed around the key concepts as mentioned in the indicative course content and will use a range of cases from organisational practice to demonstrate the application of concepts applied to HRM. - The Seminars will concentrate particularly on linking theoretical approaches with their possible functional application in relation to problems that arise in a more ongoing manner in HRM.
