This module introduces the students to the challenges of organisation and leadership that are shaped by ongoing changes at work and in today's society at large. The purpose is to examine past and new approaches and draw relevant connections between organisational theory and practice, where issues of organisation, collaboration and leadership are given particular attention.
The module will emphasise the principal role of people and human behaviour alongside the study of management systems and models. The module will address organisational processes by examining the conditions for developing sustainable organisational strategies and viable leadership approaches in both the private and the public sectors. Finally, the module will examine critically organisation and cooperation as socially accomplished activities of individuals, teams, and communities as well as projects in emerging contexts.
The aims of this module are:
- To acquire a critical understanding of the structures, processes and practices which underpin organisational action.
- To understand the impact of diverse contexts in defining appropriate leadership strategies and organisational processes.
- To emphasise individual and group learning shaping organisational knowledge and action.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to have a crtitical understanding of:
- Organising and collaboration as a situated, socially accomplished activity of different organisational actors, groups, and stakeholders.
- Views of organisation and how these have affected the notion and practice of managing people.
- The impact of internationalisation and globalisation as a multi-layered context for organisation and leadership, cultural influences and identity construction in organisations.
- Knowledge processes, with specific reference to group and team learning.
- Leadership issues and processes.
- Reflexivity as a mode of being and acting as managers and leaders.

This module will be delivered via:
- Lectures
- Seminars (for discussion of case studies, journal articles, presentations)
- Signposting to additional resources
The lectures will be developed around the key concepts as mentioned in the indicative course content complemented by selected cases where appropriate.
The seminars will concentrate particularly on linking theoretical approaches with their possible functional application in relation to particular organisational problems and implementations.
