Module description

Leadership is a critically important topic in the field of business and management studies both from a theoretical and a more practical perspective. The overarching objective of this module is to develop students’ understanding and knowledge of leadership within contemporary organisations.


The module introduces students to a wide range of leadership approaches, assumptions, models, theories and topics, highlighting central debates and concerns in the field. The module will cover traditional approaches to leadership, current issues in leadership, and critical issues in leadership, incorporating both theoretical and more practical concerns. At the end of the module students will have developed a critical appreciation of many of the leadership challenges and opportunities which impact modern organisations.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To provide students with an understanding of leadership concepts, models and theories.

  • To introduce students to the practice of leadership.

  • To enable students to analyse and critique leadership in organisations.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate clear understanding of the elements of the various theories and concepts on leadership in organisations.

  2. Compare, contrast, and evaluate leadership practice, using critical insights.

  3. Independently reflect on and analyse leaders and leadership in organisations.

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Evaluate leadership issues from a range of perspectives and be able to integrate these into a considered and practical approach to leadership, management, and organisation.

  2. Think critically about leadership by discussing current case studies and academic articles.

  3. Develop your commercial awareness based on studying examples of current leadership practices.

  4. Reflect on your attitudes to leadership, e.g., based on your personal leadership learning log.

  5. Work effectively and efficiently in small teams (in classes).

  6. Solve problems creatively and collaboratively.

  7. Reflect on your own future leadership practice.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • Five 2-hour lectures, and
  • Four 2-hour seminars, across one term.

In the lectures and seminars, we are looking for active participation from you to create an inclusive, positive learning environment for everyone. Preparation for the lectures and classes is key.

The assessment for this module is 100% coursework, and will consist of two components: 1) coursework 1 worth 30% (1,000 words) 2) coursework 2 worth 70% (2,500 words) Relevant information about the coursework will be published on the Moodle module pages.

  • Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
  • In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
