Module description

This module will revise and build upon knowledge obtained in HS233. Learners will apply their knowledge of anatomy, physiology and neurology as well as observation, investigation and intervention techniques to develop a broader understanding of complex dysphagia, service delivery and caseload management.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To provide learners with an understanding of complex eating, drinking and swallowing (EDS) needs that require development beyond entry-level qualification.

  • To enable learners to develop knowledge and awareness of policies and procedures relating to EDS.

  • To build on existing knowledge relating to service delivery and caseload management of EDS.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Achieve the Eating, Drinking and Swallowing (EDS) pre-registration competencies, in line with RCSLT specifications.

  2. Apply their knowledge of EDS to:

    1. The impact of local policies and procedures on case management and discharge planning.

    2. A range of service users including neonates, people with tracheostomies, those who are ventilator-dependant, and rare conditions and situations.

    3. Service delivery and caseload management policies and strategies, including escalation.

In order to meet accreditation requirements students will be required to complete the RCSLT pre-registration knowledge and practical competencies for EDS. The EDS competencies can be found on the RCSLT webpage:

Syllabus information


The indicative content for this module is as follows:



  • Principles of prioritisation, review and discharge in relation to EDS management

  • EDS-related national and local policies and procedures influencing service delivery and caseload management

  • Introduction to tumours

  • Head & Neck Cancer

  • Respiratory dysphagia

  • ITU and tracheostomy

  • Paediatric dysphagia

  • Other complex conditions e.g. EDS needs in adult learning disability and autism

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered throughout the Spring term via:

  • Teaching sessions one day per week. The indicative timetable will be shared with students at the start of the academic year. The teaching sessions will be scheduled around their other academic modules (HS331, HS340) and their practice placements (HS332).

Student will be expected to engage with interactive lectures and some practical workshops. Students will be provided with guidance for independent self-study and a comprehensive reading list.

To support students with additional learning needs the following consideration will be made:

  • Access to Listen Again
  • Regular breaks planned into all teaching sessions
  • Teaching materials uploaded to Moodle in advance
  • Printed materials on purple paper for in-class activities as required
  • Broad range of learning activities to meet a diversity of learning styles (e.g. didactic lecturing, group work, guided individual self-study, practical workshops)
