Travel to University of Essex

…by car

If approaching the university’s Colchester Campus from London and the South via the A12, take the exit marked Colchester (A133). If approaching from Ipswich and the North on the A12, take the exit marked Colchester. From Colchester, the university is off the A133 to Clacton. A parking permit will be provided if you intend to come by car.

…by train

From London Liverpool Street Station trains run approximately every 10-20 minutes to Colchester Station. Trains to Norwich, Lowestoft, Ipswich, Harwich, Walton-on-the-Naze and Clacton, usually stop at Colchester Station (check the departure boards). The journey takes around an hour.

Services also connect with Colchester from Norwich, Ipswich, Felixstowe and Harwich. Local bus and taxi services connect Colchester Station to the university. (Note: Colchester has three stations – these directions refer to the main station and not Colchester Town or Hythe.) When travelling from the Clacton/Walton direction, alight at Wivenhoe or Hythe Stations and use the local bus and taxi service to connect to the university.

…by coach

There are three coaches each day to/from London direct to the university (Valley Road stops). Travelling from other areas in the country, you must change at London (Victoria Coach Station). http://www.nationalexpress.com/

Heathrow

Heathrow Express is the non-stop train service between Heathrow Airport and Paddington Station. It takes 15 minutes to and from Terminals 1, 2 and 3, and 5 minutes more to and from Terminals 4 and 5. Trains depart every 15 minutes from 05:00 to 23:50, 365 days a year. Rail information and ticket desks are in the arrivals areas of all five terminals. Once at Paddington use the Circle Line of the London Underground to get to London Liverpool Street Station. http://www.heathrowexpress.com/

London Underground Piccadilly Line service to central London takes about 50-60 minutes. Tubes run every five minutes at peak times and every nine minutes at off-peak times and weekends. Once on the Piccadilly Line change at any of the following stations: Gloucester Road or South Kensington onto the Circle Line; Holborn onto the Central Line; leave the Underground at London Liverpool Street Station.

Combined frequency of buses is every 10 minutes weekdays during the day, 3-4 per hour weekday evenings. Weekends less frequent. Allow 45 minutes when travelling from Colchester Station to the university.

A taxi from Colchester Station to the university normally takes about 10-15 minutes outside rush hour.

It takes approximately 90 minutes to drive to Colchester from Heathrow.

When leaving terminals 1, 2 and 3, follow exit signs to the access/exit tunnel. Follow signs to the M4 motorway, which will quickly bring you to the M25 orbital. Terminal 4 is on the main A30 road while Terminal 5 is close to A3044. The M4 and M25 orbital are signposted. Follow the M25 north and east to the A12 (junction 28) and after some forty minutes on the A12 take the exit marked Colchester (A133). From Colchester, the university is off the A133 to Clacton. A parking permit will be provided if you intend to come by car.

Gatwick

Gatwick Express trains run every 15 minutes to Victoria Station and the journey time is 30 minutes (35 minutes on Sunday). Southern Service to London Victoria takes about 35 minutes. Trains run every 15 minutes during the day and every hour at night. From Victoria Station take the Circle Line to Liverpool Street Station. http://www.gatwickexpress.com/

Stansted

There is an hourly bus service from Stansted Airport to Colchester Station which takes just under an hour.

Taxis are very expensive from Stansted to the university (approximately £80).
