CADENZA (noun): A virtuoso solo passage inserted into a movement in a concerto.

CADENZA is the University's professional development framework to foster teaching excellence in all staff who teach and support learning. It is accredited by the Higher Education Academy and is mapped against the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF). Engagement with CADENZA will enable you to gain fellowship status of the HEA at one of four levels, giving you professional recognition that is nationally recognised and portable. It is an excellent way to fulfil your probationary requirements and plan and record your professional development at the University.

What it involves

CADENZA uses the three, interrelated dimensions of the UKPSF - Professional Activities, Core Knowledge and Professional Values - to help you evidence, organise and reflect on your experience of academic practice. You will be asked to do this in a number of ways depending on the fellowship level at which you apply.

You will produce:

  • A review of professional activities
  • A log of professional activities
  • One referee in support of your application

All GTAs and GDs (subject to role and responsibilities) are required to achieve D1 by the end of their first year of teaching.

You will produce:

  • A review of professional activities
  • A log of professional activities
  • A written case study
  • Two referees in support of your application

D2 became a probationary requirement for all academic staff at the University in August 2013.

You will produce:

  • A review of professional activities
  • A log of professional activities
  • A written case study
  • A spoken peer dialogue
  • Two referees in support of your application

You will produce:

  • A review of professional activities
  • A log of professional activities
  • A written case study
  • A spoken peer dialogue with an external partner

CADENZA is designed to be flexible and to fit in with your existing commitments. There is a rolling process of application, and assessment panels take place each term.

Support

The CADENZA team in Learning and Development will support you with the following:

Workshops. A comprehensive schedule of workshops will provide staff with appropriate information, opportunities to explore their developing practice and discuss their progress with the CADENZA team. Workshop places can be booked through your HR Organiser. Further information for each of the sessions relevant to participants can be found in the leaflets for Academic Year 2017-18.

HR Organiser also lists assessment moderation and guidance sessions for CADENZA assessors.  It should be clear from their descriptions which sessions these are and for whom they are aimed.
