Students Staff

Visiting scholars and students

We welcome students who would like to study at postgraduate level without registering for one of our standard MA or PhD courses. If you would like to come and study with us, we offer the following opportunities:

  • Erasmus/Socrates programme

If your university has a special agreement with Essex through Erasmus or a similar programme, you can be registered under this arrangement to attend particular modules and/or get supervision, subject to a supervisor being available.

  • Occasional research student

If you want to come to Essex to do supervised research, for example, as part of a PhD you are pursuing at another institution, you can by describing your research project to us.

You would need one of our supervisors to be interested in your project and agree to supervise. If successful, you would register and pay set fees for the use of library facilities and per hour for supervision. Unfortunately, we are unable to supply office space.

To apply, download our application form (.doc) and send it to Karolina Dylewska, Graduate Administrator by emailing lalpgadmin@essex.ac.uk. You will also need to attach the following documents:

    • your CV or résumé

  • Occasional taught student

You would register and pay set fees for use of facilities and each module you attend. Our taught modules are available from October to December and January to March.

  • Joint research project

If you have planned a joint research project with a member of staff at our University, you and your co-researcher need to write a joint proposal and send it with your CV or résumé for approval by the Departmental Research Strategy Committee. If successful, you will normally be invited to come to our University as a Visiting Fellow or Visiting Professor.

Our staff only collaborate on projects central to their interests in this way with people they already know, often previous Essex students and this includes those wishing to pursue post-doctoral study in our Department.
