European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)

The University of Essex officially discontinued the ECDL on 15 January 2017 and we no longer hold accredited test centre status.

If you are an existing learner with a BCS registration number, you will need to transfer to another testing centre to continue with your qualification. Your BCS registration is transferable so you will not need to pay the £30 fee again. However, you will be subject to their terms, conditions and charges for accessing study modules and sitting exams.

The BCS Find a Centre website will give you a list of alternative Testing Centres in your area. We recommend you speak to someone in person about transferring because each centre offers the qualification differently.

  • How long do I have to complete the ECDL?

Once registered with the BCS, you have three years from the date of your first exam in which to complete the qualification. Until you take your first exam, your expiry date is open-ended.

  • I paid for study units and exams, can I get a refund on unused credits?

Non-University personnel who have paid in advance for study units and exams are eligible for refunds on unused credits. You will be emailed information about this and you must respond to the email by 28 February 2017 in order to receive your refund.

Refunds will not be issued after 28 February 2017

  • Can I get a refund on my BCS registration fee?

No. However, your BCS registration is transferable, so you can continue with your qualification at an alternative centre. We recommend you get in touch with them directly to discuss options.

  • I've completed the qualification and I haven't received my certificate

Upon successful completion of all seven modules a certificate will be awarded. Certificates usually take around three to four weeks to arrive. We will email you when your certificate is ready for collection or if you are unable to get to campus it can be posted to you.
