Equipment bookings

Film and media services are provided by The Media Centre and based at Colchester Campus and can also be provided at Southend and Loughton Campus.

Our services


  • TV studios

    Camera

    TV Studio 1 (HD)

    TV Studio 1 is a high definition (HD) studio containing:

    • three cameras
    • full lighting rig
    • multi-channel sound
    • autocue
    • remote gallery containing a multi-viewer for camera monitoring, vision mixer, lighting desk and multi-channel audio mixer.
    • this studio can master to DVD and SSD in HD.

    TV Studio 2 (HD)

    TV Studio 2 is a high definition studio (HD) containing:

    • five HD cameras
    • full lighting rig
    • multi-channel sound
    • green screen facilities
    • autocue
    • large LED screens (55”) for presentations
    • a remote gallery equipped with a multi-viewer for monitoring of the cameras, lighting desk, a vision mixer, and a multi-channel audio mixer
    • studio can master to DVD, SSD cards or DV tape in HD.

    Costs, usage and regulations

    • Both studios must have a technicians in attendance so charges will apply.

  • Audio booth

    About

    The Audio Booth is a dedicated area which is Windows based and is running Adobe Audition audio editing software. The Audio Booth also contains:

    • a multi-channel audio desk
    • boom microphone
    • multi-channel headphone listening facilities

    You must be able demonstrate to us that you are able to use this equipment before we can book you in.

    • Free of charge unless help is required then technician charges will apply.

  • Editing suites

    About

    Our edit suites are running Adobe Premier Pro and Avid NLE editing software for professional editing services and are PC based.

    You must be able demonstrate to us that you are able to use this software before we can book you in.

    We also have a simpler editing software called Adobe Elements which is mostly icon driven and is very easy to use and learn. We do run training courses on using cameras effectively and the editing process using Adobe Elements. If you require this service please get in touch with us to discuss your requirements. Charges will apply for this service.

  • Media transfer and copying

    We offer:

    • CD and DVD duplication
    • VHS to DVD transfer
    • Mini DV to DVD transfer
    • CD and DVD rip to file
    • CD and DVD labelling

We provide a filming service for University events, meetings and projects, as well as bespoke departmental videos tailored to meet the aims and objectives of the department.

To submit a filming request, please complete a video brief form outlining the video's aims and objectives. Please refer to the video brand toolkit (.pdf) for branding guidance.

About Box of Broadcasts

Box of Broadcasts (BoB) is an on demand TV and radio service for education. With BoB you can:

  • access millions of recorded broadcasts dating back to the 1990s
  • record programmes from over 65 free-to-air channels
  • create clips, playlists and citations
  • embed content in VLEs and share on social media
  • search programme transcripts and subtitles

BoB operates under the ERA licence and is produced by Learning on Screen: the British Universities and Colleges Film and Video Council.

Using BoB

BoB is available free of charge for all current University of Essex staff and students. Use of BoB constitutes agreement with the BoB Terms and Conditions. BoB is only available in the UK.

Sign in to BoB

  1. Go to https://learningonscreen.ac.uk/ondemand and click SIGN IN
  2. For 'Where are you from?' enter University of Essex
  3. Select University of Essex from the list, and then click GO
  4. Sign in with your Essex ID and password. You will be redirected back to BoB if successful.

  • Equipment loans for students

    Equipment loans are only available to students from the following courses and/or departments:

    • Film studies
    • Journalism
    • Languages and Linguistics

    Book equipment

  • Equipment hire for staff and external customers

    Staff and external customers may hire our equipment for location filming. All hire equipment must be accompanied by a technician which means you will be charged for technician time in addition to the hire charges.

    Available equipment to hire:

    • Camera JVC 650
    • Tripod
    • Dolly
    • Field monitor
    • Radio mic (lapel or hand held)
    • Boom, cabled mic and dead cat
    • Lighting dedo (two spots and soft box)
    • Reflector

Staff and students can use most of our services for free however you will be charged for technician time if you require support, or if you choose to use our services at evenings and weekends.

Filming charges

If you're an external customer, please contact us to arrange a meeting to discuss your requirements. We will provide you with a quote upon assessment of the project.
