IT information for new staff

We've put together some useful information to help you get started with IT services at Essex.

  • Your IT account

    Your Essex ID, along with your password, gives you access to all of the services that are available to you, for example email, eduroam wifi, computer labs, Moodle etc.

    Your Essex ID will look something like this: Your Essex ID is also your email address, however if you're a member of staff you can choose a preferred email address.

    You should change your password as soon as you get your IT account. After that you'll need to change your password at least once every four months - we'll email you a reminder when this is approaching.

    The easiest way to change your password is online, using either your most recent password, your external email address and passphrase or a one-time password.

    You can also log on to any staff computer using the username and password below.

    • Username: pwchange
    • Password: changepw

  • Wifi

    Our campus wifi network is called eduroam. It's free to use and you can connect to it as soon as you arrive on campus – simply sign in with your new Essex email address and password. See our wifi how-to guides if you need help connecting.

  • Email

    We provide all staff with a Microsoft Office 365 email account that gives you a personal email address and 50 GB of space to store your emails (the largest file you can send or receive is 25 MB).

    You can access your email on staff computers via Outlook or by using Webmail at:

    You can also set up your email for your personal smartphone, tablet or computer.

    If you're a member of staff or postgraduate research student you can change your email address.

  • Telephones

    We provide the University's main telephone service and can help with requests, faults and moves.

  • Get Microsoft Office for free

    As a member of staff at Essex you're entitled to download a free copy of the latest version of Microsoft Office on your home PC, Mac or mobile device.

  • Video conferencing

    We provide a range of video conferencing services that enable you to meet and collaborate with colleagues across our campuses or around the world, all free of charge.

  • Learn with

    You get free and unlimited access to - a leading provider of online video training with thousands of high quality courses delivered by industry experts and respected authors covering a range of topics in education, business, design and creative media.

  • Loan IT equipment

    Staff can loan audio and visual equipment for work purposes free of charge, for example cameras, laptops, and portable screens.

  • IT purchasing

    We provide a service for purchasing all centrally provided IT equipment at the University.

  • Training courses

    We run classroom training sessions for staff covering a range of software and services.

  • IT help and support

    IT Helpdesk

    Our IT Helpdesk is your first point of contact for all IT problems and queries. There’s an IT Helpdesk at each of our three campuses which you can find at:

    • Colchester: Learning Hub, Silberrad Student Centre (ground floor)
    • Southend: Info Point in the Learning Hub
    • Loughton: Library first Floor, Main House
