The Society Then and Now

From the very beginning of the Society’s foundation in 1852, outings have been part of its lifeblood. Outings in the nineteenth century were often all day affairs, dependant on the railway and horse drawn vehicles. Today they are usually afternoon events, with tea provided. Dress may have changed since the visit to Colchester Castle in 1907 (shown here) but the same spirit of curiosity still enthuses those attending.

Outings are an invaluable opportunity to meet like-minded members, to be guided by an expert round places not usually open to the public and to learn more about the history of the county and its heritage.
