Irish nationals

Due to reciprocal agreements under the Common Travel Area arrangement, England has confirmed that funding and immigration status changes coming into place for EU students from 2021 do not apply to Irish nationals living in the UK and Ireland. If you are planning to join us as a new student from October 2021, you are therefore likely to be classified as a 'Home' student for tuition fee purposes, as long as you meet the general conditions. In addition, you may be eligible for a tuition fee loan through Student Finance England. Find out more.

Study abroad and placement years

Study abroad year

If you are starting your course in academic year 2020/21 and you are opting to include a study abroad year into your program, there will be no tuition fee charged for your study abroad year.

Placement year

If you opt for an industrial or clinical placement year as part of your course, you will pay 20% of the standard tuition fee for that year.

Annual fee changes

For students commencing their studies at the University of Essex in the 2020-21 academic year, fees will increase for each academic year of study. For full-time undergraduate students with an international fee status (currently not including EU students) your programme of study will increase by 5% in 2021-22. This is subject to review for each subsequent academic year.

Our fees enable us to provide a high quality educational experience, to invest in teaching, services and facilities, and to increase our investment in widening participation, access and student opportunity. We publish information on how we use your fees.

Private loans

The best option when financing your studies is a government-funded student loan, but if that isn’t enough to cover all your expenses, or you’re not eligible for government support, Future Finance offer loans to UK, EU and international students with a UK domiciled address. They offer amounts from £2,000 - £40,000 to cover both tuition and living costs.

US Direct loans

If you're from the United States, you may be eligible for a federal direct loan from the US Department of Education.
