University of Essex Psychology Doctoral Scholarships

2020-21 entry

Our University of Essex Psychology Doctoral Scholarship supports talented PhD students to study in our Department of Psychology. One scholarship is available in 2020-21.

If you have an excellent academic background, the potential for future achievement and financial need, you could be eligible. Once awarded, you'll receive the scholarship for three years of your PhD (subject to satisfactory progression). The scholarship includes:

  • a doctoral stipend equivalent to the Research Councils UK National Minimum Doctoral Stipend (around £15,000)
  • a departmental allowance of approximately £500 per year
  • Proficio funding of £2,500 to invest in advanced skills training

You can apply for this scholarship if you have a confirmed academic member of staff to supervise your project and have applied for a PhD place.

You will need to have a high 2.1 or first-class undergraduate degree, or an MSc in Psychology or a related discipline.

MPhil and Masters by Dissertation courses are not eligible.

If you're a current student looking for information about an award you received, see our terms and conditions for previous years.

How to apply

Before you apply for any funding, please ensure that a potential supervisor has agreed to support you and that you have made your formal application for PhD study:

The deadline for applying for a PhD place is midday on 20 January 2020.

If you have applied for SeNSS funding

If you've applied for a full-time SeNSS studentship starting in 2020-21, you'll automatically be considered for our Essex Psychology Doctoral Scholarship and don't need to complete a separate application form.

We ask all eligible Home/EU applicants to apply for the SeNSS studentship.

University of Essex Psychology Doctoral Scholarships don't cover SeNSS 1+3 applications, but you'll be considered for an Integrated PhD course if there is one appropriate for your studies. All successful Integrated PhD applicants would have to fund their first year.

If you haven't applied for SeNSS funding

If you haven't applied for a SeNSS studentship you should complete the University of Essex Psychology Doctoral Scholarship application form (.doc).

Please note that you must be applying for a new programme of study at the University of Essex, starting in October 2020, in order to be eligible. Applications for the University of Essex Psychology Doctoral Scholarship must be submitted by midnight 20 January 2020.
