Humanities Doctoral Scholarship 2019-20

Our University of Essex Humanities Doctoral Scholarships support talented PhD students in their studies with us. These awards are available to students who can demonstrate an excellent academic background and the potential for future achievement. They are awarded for each year of study during the standard period of enrolment for your degree, subject to satisfactory progress.

Once awarded, you'll receive the scholarship for three years of your PhD (subject to satisfactory progression). The scholarship includes:

  • a fee waiver equal to the Home/EU fee (or equivalent fee discount for overseas students). See the terms and conditions below for more details of each award
  • a doctoral stipend equivalent to the Research Councils UK National Minimum Doctoral Stipend (£15,009 for 2019-20
  • a training bursary of £250 per year
  • Proficio funding, which can be used to 'buy' advanced skills training

Eligibility

The departments and schools participating in the University of Essex Humanities Doctoral Scholarship scheme for 2019-20 are East 15, History, Law, Literature, Film and Theatre Studies, and Philosophy and Art History.

You do not need to make an application for an award, as you will automatically be considered if you meet the criteria stated above.

The deadline for applying is 30 May 2019.

After you apply

Scholarship recipients will be chosen based on:

  • academic ability - based on previous academic qualifications, normally a Masters degree with distinction or merit
  • research potential - based on the candidate's research proposal submitted with their application
  • professional development potential - based on the candidate's skills, aptitudes and potential to support their department's undergraduate teaching or research activities
