We offer postgraduate taught double degrees with our international partners. These degrees are 1+1 progression arrangements where you work for two Master’s degrees, one at Essex and another at a prestigious university across the globe.

We offer a range of Masters and PhD courses in economics, econometrics, and money and banking.

Economics at Essex

Economics is apparent in all our lives, through politics, education, the environment, healthcare and even your own living costs. At Essex, you'll get a chance to explore all of this from new and exciting angles, whilst developing the knowledge and understanding that will help you have a career to be proud of.

You work closely with our creative and committed academics - research stars who are pioneering new solutions to global issues, inspiring your education.

You learn how to look at the world through an economist's lense, taking a critical approach to dismantle a proposition, working with big data and robust methodologies to build an argument based on sound empirical evidence.

We'll teach you advanced theory and methods, preparing you well for further study or a career in a number of different fields.

Our department is a richly diverse home to staff and students from all over the world who have a strong sense of belonging and want to think, learn and achieve together. They want to influence and improve the world - for themselves and others.

Are you intellectually curious?

Dr Abhishek Chakravarty tells us about the research strength in the department, his research interest as a development economist and how many different aspects of economics inform his research as well as his teaching.

World-leading research

We are ranked among the top 150 departments on the planet according to the QS World University Rankings (2017), and ranked 5th in the UK for research excellence (REF 2014), with over 90% of our research rated ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide (2017) also ranked us as a top 30 UK university for economics.

A national centre for economic and social research

The University of Essex is the leading university in the UK for economic and social research and a focal point for national funding. We work closely with the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER)and the UK Data Archive (UKDA) and many of our researchers collaborate on projects, applying economic theory to real-life situations.
