Best of the bunch

Our rankings speak for themselves. We are 5th in the UK for research excellence (REF 2014), a top 30 UK university for economics (The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017) and ranked among the top 150 departments on the planet according to the QS World University Rankings (2017).

The world in one place

We are home to students and staff from all over the world who have a strong sense of belonging and want to think, learn and achieve together. You are surrounded by researchers who are at the forefront of their fields, and some of the most prominent economists of the time.

Our staff and students want to influence and improve the world - for themselves and others.

More than satisfied

We make our students happy. In the most recent National Student Survey, we achieved 92% student satisfaction.

As a student in our Department, you receive one of the best economics trainings in the country. In your course, we give you the choice to explore areas of economics that fascinate you, and teach you the key skills needed by all economics graduates for your career after Essex, from statistics, to modelling and analysis.

A national focus for social and economic research

The University of Essex is the leading university in the UK for social science and the focal point for national funding for social and economic research. We have close links with our Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) and UK Data Archive, giving you access to the latest research materials, datasets, archives and resources. We also have links with Essex Business School through our collaborative work with the Centre for Financial Econometrics.

Connecting with business

Many of our researchers offer consultancy services to international and national organisations. We work with businesses, especially in London, and other major financial centres, helping us to develop research for today's society and informing our teaching for the future.
