Centre for Global Accountability

We advance interdisciplinary research in the field of accountability across all sectors, in both developed and emerging economies.

Our mission, vision and values

We aim to:

  • further the understanding of governance and accountability ideas shaping the world
  • produce public policy oriented research and provide practical solutions
  • encourage collaboration with a wide range of organisations and individuals
  • critique contemporary practices and power to advance democracy, equity and social justice
  • use a plurality of theoretical perspectives to call power to account
  • provide intellectual freedom to challenge established orthodoxies
  • engage in lifelong learning

We also supervise PhD students.

Our work

Recent examples of our work include:

  • Tax avoidance and austerity

We play a leading role in research into tax avoidance, tax havens, profit shifting and creating public awareness of issues.

  • Global politics and emerging economies

Professor Shahzad Uddin grew up in Bangladesh at a time of social and political struggle. His upbringing made him consider the idea that poverty can be brought about by global politics.

His research now looks to question global politics and the World Bank agenda in emerging economies. He argues that assumptions made by multilateral agencies, who state that private ownership is more beneficial than public ownership, are flawed as they have not taken local context into consideration.
