IGGI offers fully-funded four-year studentships. You will be expected to submit your doctoral thesis within this time.

Research themes

IGGI PhDs will cover a broad range of projects across intelligent games and game intelligence, but we particularly encourage applications in four areas:

  • embodied interaction
  • intelligent games / believable characters
  • gamification
  • AI for game design

More detailed descriptions of each of these areas are available on the IGGI website.

The eligibility requirements are set by the EPSRC. In summary, to be eligible for a full award, you will normally have to meet all of the following criteria:

  • have settled status in the UK, meaning no restrictions on how long you can stay
  • been 'ordinarily resident' in the UK for three years before the start of your studentship
  • not been residing in the UK wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education (UK and EU nationals are exempt from this requirement)

However, in some circumstances and in order to support the best students, we may be able to offer you a studentship if you do not meet these criteria. Please contact us for more information.

Before applying, please review the full eligibility criteria published by the EPSRC.

You can still apply for a studentship if you have secured other funding.

Your studentship will cover tuition fees and a yearly stipend for the four year duration of the programme. The stipend will be £13,863 in 2014-15 and is likely to increase with inflation each year.

We expect to offer three or four places each year over the next five years.
