Overview and studentships

The EnvEast Doctoral Training Partnership was created in November 2013 with funding from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). It's a collaboration between University of Essex, University of East Anglia, University of Kent and a number of research centres working in our fields of interest.

Fully-funded PhD studentships have been provided to research students in our School of Life Sciences undertaking projects in three key themes:

  1. climate, marine and atmospheric systems
  2. biodiversity, ecosystem services and sustainable development
  3. natural hazards

Studentships for October 2019

The last cohort of EnvEast studentships began in October 2018. Applications for the new ARIES Doctoral Training Partnership studentships for October 2019 entry are now open.

EnvEast offers a range of training and professional development opportunities during your period of study. You'll also have many networking opportunities, enabling you to build long-term relationships with other researchers in your field.

As well as EnvEast opportunities, you will also benefit from Proficio, our University's unique professional development scheme for doctoral students. You'll receive up to £2,500 during your studies to fund specialist training across a range of areas from research skills and managing your PhD, to presenting your work and getting published.

EnvEast also offers innovation and enterprise training to all PhD students and early career researchers at partner universities. You don't need to be in receipt of a studentship to participate.
