How to apply

You should apply for your PhD course in the usual way. After you have been accepted for a place at our University, you can apply for a CHASE scholarship online.

We strongly encourage you to contact the School or Department you wish to apply to at the earliest opportunity in order to discuss your research proposal and potential supervision arrangements. This is particularly important in order to give supervisors enough time to assist in the development of your application to ensure the best chance of success.

Application requirements

Applications for CHASE AHRC studentships require the following items:

  • an outline of your research proposal which you should develop in consultation with your potential supervisor (10,000 characters maximum). This does not include spaces but does include punctuation, and indicative bibliography
  • two references in support of your application for a CHASE scholarship
  • details of any relevant professional experience
  • a summary of your education and training
  • a section to be completed by the proposed supervisor, including a statement of support for the proposed research project

You will also need to attend an interview with your chosen school or department as part of the application process.

Applying online

The CHASE 2019 studentship competition opens for online applications on Monday 8 October 2018. You will need to discuss your application with the department to which you are applying for a place of study. The department will provide you with an access code for you to commence the application process.

The deadline for applications for October 2019 entry is Tuesday 5 February 2019 at 23:59pm.

You must apply for a PhD place before you apply for our studentships. The deadline by which you must have received a final offer of a place at Essex is 31 March 2019. Applications for PhD study at our University can take up to six weeks to process, so please submit your PhD application well in advance of the CHASE application deadline.

Selection process

After the submission deadline, applications pass through an internal University selection process, before a decision is made whether to nominate particular applications to one or more of four CHASE selection panels. Applications put forward to CHASE selection panels are considered alongside applications from other CHASE partner institutions. Final decisions by CHASE selection panels are approved by the CHASE management board and candidates will be notified of the outcome by 12 April 2019.
