Study with us

Group of people conducting a meeting

Our undergraduate courses can be taken with an industrial placement year which gives you invaluable work experience to show future employers. You will gain new work-based skills while putting your course knowledge into practice.

Wide choice of courses

We offer undergraduate courses in three areas.

  • Computer science - covering computer systems and how they are programmed. If you plan to work in computer games or information and communication technology, these are the courses for you.
  • Computer systems engineering - spanning the disciplines of computer science and digital electronics. As well as gaining software and systems skills, you will learn more about how computer networks and embedded systems work.
  • Electronic and telecommunications engineering - providing an in-depth knowledge of electronic engineering, with options to specialise in electronics or telecommunications systems.

Our degrees are accredited by the relevant professional bodies, enhancing your CV further.

Flexible course structure

Our courses offer a highly flexible, modular structure. You can build a programme of study that matches your interests by choosing from our wide range of undergraduate modules. In each of our themes our courses share common first-year modules and so it is normally possible to change your degree course at the end of your first year.

Most of our courses give you the option of spending your third year on an industrial placement or studying abroad. These pathways help you maximise your chances of success in the graduate job market by providing you with invaluable skills.

Preparing you for life after graduation

There has rarely been a better time for students to choose to study computing or electronic engineering at university. Employers are crying out for graduates. The IT and engineering sectors are now growing at a rate that outstrips the supply of fresh talent. There will be openings for suitably qualified software professionals and engineers as the market for graduates continues to expand.

98% of our students gained graduate-level employment or a place on a full-time higher degree course within six months of graduating in 2015 (most recent figures available). Our graduates also had the highest average starting salary of all Essex graduates.

Our courses are designed to equip you with the skills you will need for a career in the IT or engineering sector. We place an emphasis on learning key skills that will be valuable even if you decide to move away from these sectors. By studying with us you will also be prepared for postgraduate study in the future.

Graduate profiles

Our graduates acquire exceptional skills during their time at Essex and have gained jobs with a wide variety of top employers. IT graduates are in high demand and our graduate profiles demonstrate the versatility of the qualifications that we offer.
