Bibliography

Prof. Stuart Walker obtained a B.Sc. in Physics from Manchester University in 1973, a M.Sc. in Telecommunications Systems and a Ph.D. in Electronics in 1975 and 1981 respectively; both from the University of Essex. In 1982 he joined British Telecom Research Laboratories and worked in their submarine optical transmission systems division. At BT he pioneered the concept of unrepeatered transmission systems and in 1987 was promoted to head the transatlantic link repeater design group. In 1988, he became a Senior Lecturer at Essex University where his research interests widened to include access network technologies. He was promoted to Full Professor in 2004. He has been involved with a wide range of EPSRC projects including OAKLEAF on optoelectronic VDSL links and ACORN for WDM access technologies. European Union project involvement includes MUSE-1, MUSE-2 on access networks, UROOF on optoelectronic UWB with reflective electro-absorption transducers, and the Networks of Excellence, e-Photon/One, e-Photon/One+ and BONE. He is currently involved with the UK Technology Strategy Board’s Roadmapping and Arrayed-Waveguide Grating Network study groups.
