Employability advice

Our Careers Centre

Our Employability and Careers Centre helps you develop the skills for a successful career. Our friendly staff and excellent resources help you to make informed career choices and to enter your chosen field.

Our courses have a direct correlation with professional applications, leading to enriched careers in this creative and exciting field, including refugee care, management studies, adult psychotherapy, and child and adolescent psychotherapy.

Most of our students are already professionals, clinical and non-clinical, who come to deepen their knowledge and academic understanding of their field. Typically, our students are employed as:

  • psychotherapists
  • psychologists and educational psychologists
  • residential care workers and managers
  • nurses
  • primary school teachers
  • university and higher education lecturers
  • counsellors.

These professions are in a wide variety of sectors, including organisations and companies such as:

  • British Refugees Company
  • James Sear
  • Anglia Ruskin University
  • Medical Foundations for the Care of Victims of Torture
  • Kingston Primary Care Trust
  • National Health Service
  • Schools
  • Private/Self-employed practices.

In addition to the various career paths, our graduates also continue in higher education by undertaking postgraduate studies, here at Essex or at other institutions, to continue to deepen their understanding of their chosen specialism.

Employability and Careers Centre

Throughout your time at Essex, advisors at our Employability and Careers Centre will be available to help you formulate your career plan.

Work placements

Employers today are saying that graduates who have had no previous work experience at all are 'unlikely to be successful' during the selection process and have 'little or no chance' of receiving a job offer for their organisations’ graduate programmes. (High Fliers 2015).

Many of our Departments give you the chance to take up a work placement as part of your course and there are a number of placement vacancies you can apply for. Find out more about our work placements.
