Undergraduate courses

Our undergraduate curriculum offers study of Latin America through an interdisciplinary programme in the humanities and the social sciences. You can build a course that matches your interests by choosing from modules in literature, film, history of art, history, politics and sociology. You also learn Spanish and/or Portuguese.

All Latin American studies courses are four years in length and you spend your third year studying abroad.

  • BA Latin American Studies

This course is designed for those with enthusiasm, passion and intellectual curiosity about Latin America. You do not need any previous, specialist knowledge of Latin America - just a desire to learn about this fascinating region. You learn about Latin American history, art, literature, society, economics and politics, and with our flexible course structure you can choose modules in those areas that interest you most. You also learn Spanish and Portuguese, but do not need to have studied them before.

  • BA Latin American Studies with Business Management

This joint honours course enables you to specialise in a subject field right from the start, and is ideal if you are interested in a business career in Latin America, or in a sector with close ties to the region. Your year spent in Latin America will be of great value to future employers.

  • BA Latin American Studies with Human Rights

This joint honours course enables you to specialise in a subject field right from the start. You study compulsory modules in both Latin American and human rights and are also able to choose from a wide variety of optional modules. Your study of human rights gives you increased context for your study of political and social issues in Latin America, while your in-depth study of the region gives you greater context for your study of human rights issues.

  • BA Modern Languages with Latin American Studies

This joint honours course is administered by our Department of Language and Linguistics. It gives you the opportunity to study up to three different languages, alongside your study of the cultures and societies of Latin America.
