Year in Europe

Statue in Berlin

All of our undergraduate courses include a year spent studying abroad, giving you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live and study in Europe and immerse yourself in its culture.

Europe is a global political and economic centre that exerts enormous international influence. Few areas in the world are as fascinating or complex as Europe, with its diverse array of art, architecture, sociology, politics, literature and history.

By taking one of our European studies undergraduate courses or a related postgraduate course, you will be taught by leading experts and researchers to understand the nature of contemporary Europe from an economic, political and sociological perspective. You will also explore Europe’s history and diverse traditions, as well as its culture past and present. European studies at Essex encompasses the whole of the “new” Europe, from Ireland to the Russian Far East.

Our interdisciplinary approach

We offer interdisciplinary courses that combine study of the humanities and the social sciences. You also have the option of gaining language skills which are highly valuable in today’s graduate job market. Alternatively, you can follow a course without a language component.

European research at Essex

The range of subjects offered is mirrored in the wide variety of research projects currently being pursued by the academic staff who teach our courses. Our Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence is a research centre that provides a forum for pan-European research at our University, demonstrating our commitment to European studies.

UG Open Days

Book a place at our undergraduate Open Day. Our department and admissions staff can answer any questions you have, and you can speak to current students about life at Essex while taking a campus tour.
