Frequently asked questions

  • Where is the School Office?

    We are located in Square 2, Room 4.514. Use entrance 2NW. We are open from 10.00am to 1.00pm and 2.00pm to 4.00pm, Monday to Friday. In weeks 1-3; 11; 16 and 25 we extend our opening ours from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. You can drop in at any time during these hours.

  • How will I receive information from the School?

    You must check your University email regularly. This is how we will keep in contact with you. We recommend that you connect your email to your smartphone if you have one. You will also have been given a Student Handbook at your Welcome meeting.

  • What is the Peer Mentoring Programme?

    The Peer Mentoring Programme is voluntary. If you are an undergraduate student you can opt to have a Year 2 or Year 3 student assigned to you and they will help you to settle in and answer any questions you might have about University life. They can listen to and discuss any issues or problems you have. They are there to help you. If you are interested in having a mentor assigned to you, please contact Sarah Mumford by emailing

  • What is FASer?

    FASer is our online system for you to submit your assignments. There is a naming convention for your files that we recommend you use: “FamilyName_RegistrationNumber_Module_AssignmentNumber.” eg:

  • How and when do I submit my assignments?

    Most of your assignments will be submitted via FASer, but you may be asked to submit your assignments in other ways, for example in person at the School Office, or during your lab sessions. Check the assignment schedule for hand-in details and deadlines. Please note that a deadline time given as 11:59:59 means noon and not midnight on the date the assignment is due.

  • Am I allowed extensions on submissions?

    There are no extensions and you will receive 0% for a late submission. However, if you have a genuine reason (that can be supported by evidence) for not submitting your assignment on time, you can fill-in in a late submission form which will be considered by the Late Submissions Committee. Please contact the School office for more details.

  • How do I find information about my modules?

    Information about your modules can be found in the Online Resource Bank (formerly Course Materials Repository, Essex login only). This is a secure website for current students and you will be given access to the Online Resource Bank when you arrive.

  • What is MyEssex?

    MyEssex is your own personal portal and has several options for you to personalise a range of links to online services. It will also provide information and links based on what it knows about you, for example your course and campus. You will be given access to MyEssex when you arrive.

  • Is there a forum where I can air my student views?

    The Staff Student Liaison Committee provides a forum at which students are invited to air concerns or issues affecting all aspects of Departmental life. Student members are normally elected during week 3 or 4.

  • How can I get lecture notes?

    Lecture notes are handed out at lectures. You are expected to attend all lectures. If you miss a lecture you can check in the foyer near the School Office for spare copies. The School Office will only fulfil individual requests for lecture notes if there are special circumstances. The Listen Again audio recordings of lectures can be a helpful revision tool, but must not be used as a substitute for actual attendance at lectures.
