Rising Stars

RISING STARS is a university-wide initiative set up in partnership with professional organisations and graduate recruiters to improve social mobility for our diverse student population. We want to provide all of you with opportunities and experiences to help you realise your full potential, regardless of your background. RISING STARS also provides a unique opportunity for our partners to recruit from a skilled, motivated and diverse talent pool, levelling the playing field for Essex graduates entering an increasingly competitive job market. 

There are 3 distinct stages to the programme: Prepare; Experience; and Achieve. You will be expected to commit to completing activities at each level based on your individual goals and aspirations.

  • PREPARE: You can't decide where to go or how to get there until you truly understand where you are now. We will help you to evaluate your skills, strengths and dreams for the future through a combination of Careers Services and employer-led workshops.
  • EXPERIENCE: Gain real industry know how through accessing exclusive employer experiences, insight and development opportunities. You will be invited to network with graduate employers and accomplished professionals to help develop your unique skills profile.  You will also have the chance to be matched with a professional mentor based on your individual goals and aspirations.
  • ACHIEVE: Put your skills to the test in a mock assessment centre or mock interview evaluated by an external professional with feedback to support your next steps. You will also create your own personal statement or elevator pitch to help you stand out from the crowd and really impress those graduate recruiters.
  • Who is it for?

    Whilst RISING STARS is aimed at improving social mobility it is an inclusive programme and we accept nominations for undergraduates of all backgrounds, levels and disciplines. It could be that you are the first in your family to attend University, or perhaps you just don’t have the professional networks to go to for advice.

    At Essex, student success is at the heart of our mission and we are dedicated to supporting each individual to experience a transformational education and achieve outstanding outcomes. We want you to go on a journey, to develop skills and insight into the world of work, understand what it takes to succeed, and build the confidence to achieve your goals.

  • What is involved?

    If accepted onto the programme you will gain access to a unique network of peers, graduate employers, professional mentors, experiences and development opportunities. You will be able to select from a suite of activities to fit around your studies which will not only serve to better your employment prospects, but maximise your academic potential too. 

    You will be expected to attend a certain number of sessions from each stage of the programme to complete your Rising Stars journey.  Here are a few examples of what’s in store:

    • Exclusive Welcome and Christmas Events. This year’s Christmas celebration will be hosted in the exciting new Innovation Centre and is an opportunity to mingle with mentors and local business professionals over mince pies.
    • Priority booking for key University events such as Career Conversations, SPRINT training, Enterprise Bootcamp and careers workshops.
    • Professional photographs and skills development sessions to build your LinkedIn profile.
    • External events hosted by graduate recruiters exclusively for Rising Stars.
    • Six months mentoring from an accomplished professional or one-off Meet a Mentor session.
    • Mock assessment centre or mock interview with input and feedback from graduate recruiters and/or local business professionals.
  • How do I sign up?

    Students can self-nominate or nominate a friend by completing this simple form on CareerHub by 25 October

    We also welcome nominations from University staff so if you know of a student who you think might benefit from this programme, please nominate them by 18 October 2019.

    If you are nominating someone else, please ensure you let them know as we will be contacting them directly.  There are only 50 spaces available so please state clearly the reason why you feel you or your nominee would benefit from the programme.  Nominations will be reviewed and places offered on a first come first served basis.
