Work with schools

We are involved in a number of activities that reflect our research and standing as a centre of teaching excellence. Through sharing our expertise and intellectual wealth we hope to educate and inspire the next generation of scientists. Our University has an Outreach team that does extensive work with local schools including school visits and other events. We are regularly involved in our University's outreach events.

Outreach events

Year 12 conferences

We run a yearly conference to help AS level students prepare for their exams, give them an insight into student life at Essex, the diversity of a course in biological sciences and potential career options.

Ecology Day for post-16 students

Post-16 students can have the opportunity to gain practical skills in fieldwork, including use of line transects, species identification and comparing different habitats. Usually held in September, this event is made possible by a collaboration between our University and the Essex Wildlife Trust.

Spectroscopy in a suitcase (SIAS)

Spectroscopy in a suitcase is a piece of mobile equipment which can be taken to schools to give students hands-on experience of how different chemicals react to heat. The free workshops are run by University of Essex student ambassadors and schools are welcome to apply.

Work placements for school and college students

It is occasionally possible for us to offer work placements for school or college students for up to one week, but places are very limited. These placements offer an insight of the work we do.

A typical work placement involves:

  • a working day of 9am to 5pm with coffee/tea and lunch breaks
  • handling deliveries and sorting them, the processes of waste disposal and maintenance of biological samples
  • making media for culturing cells and a collection of material to be autoclaved
  • working in a tissue culture laboratory with a possibility for hands-on experience working with cell lines and
  • working in a molecular biology laboratory

If you would like to express an interest in a work placement, please email us.
