What you need to bring

Study bedrooms

All of our single study rooms are fully furnished with a single bed (four foot wide bed in The Meadows and The Copse), a desk and chair, bookshelves, a wardrobe, a bin and a lamp (integrated desk light not lamp at The Meadows, The Copse and University Quays). You will need to bring your own:

  • bedding, towels and homely items such as rugs and posters

If you want to bring a mini-fridge with you then you need to fill in an application before you arrive. You can only request to have a mini-fridge for medical reasons. We will also require medical evidence to support your request. Please email the Student Information Team at for further information.

We have a rolling maintenance programme in place to continually review and improve our accommodation, so some areas may have older facilities than others, depending on when they were last refurbished.

Kitchens are equipped with a cooker (induction hob at The Copse), refrigerator, freezer, microwave oven, kettle, ironing board, and storage units.
You will need to bring your own:

  • crockery (plates, cups etc)
  • cutlery (knives, forks, spoons)
  • saucepans and frying pans (you will need magnetic pans to use on the induction hobs at The Copse which are available from Essex Essentials)
  • other cooking utensils (tin opener, whisk etc)
  • iron - but only if you really need one!

Why not chat with your new flat mates via Facebook and make a plan on who is bringing what item? This way you can share and don't all have to bring a full set of everything. You can join your group via the link on our residences pages.

Essex Essentials

If you need to buy new stuff for when you arrive, you can get your essential first-week items online before you arrive at the University and have them delivered to your room. We provide a range of bedding, kitchen and electrical packs containing all the items you will need in your student accommodation.

Away for more than 7 days?

To make sure we comply with Health and Safety regulations we need to know if you are going to be away from your room for more than 7 days. If you are taking a holiday, or visiting friends and relatives and will be away for more than 7 days, please complete the online water check form.
