Returning students

Accommodation applications for returning students for 2019-20 are now open.

Applications will be dealt with on a first come, first served basis. If you would like to live with your friends, please make sure you list all their PRIDs when applying. Each of your friends must also submit their own application and have the same preferences as you. Please note that we may not be able to house you together.

When you fill in your application form, list your choice of locations in order of preference. Don't select any type of room you're not prepared to accept. You can see all the different accommodation options, however, not all areas will be available to returning students for 2019-20.

Free gym membership

We are adding free membership for 2019-20, so it will be part of the rent for students applying for returning accommodation in Colchester.

Overseas (non EU) undergraduate students

Only students that started their course before the academic year 2018-19 are eligible to apply for guaranteed returning accommodation in 2019-20.

You're guaranteed accommodation as long as you apply by 5pm on Friday 11 January 2019. Before completing an application, please make sure you've read the application guide (.docx) carefully.

Selecting your preferred accommodation

On the application form you will be asked to select your preferred locations. Please select these in order of preference and don't select any location which you wouldn't be prepared to accept. We cannot guarantee that you'll be offered your first choice of accommodation.

Living with your friends

You're welcome to request an allocation with your friends. You should list their PRIDs in the 'additional information' field on the online application form. Each of your friends must also submit their own separate application and have the same preferences as you. Please note that we cannot guarantee we will be able to allocate you and your friends as a group.

Please make sure you select 2019-20 from the academic year drop-down on the first page of our application website. You will also need your University log-in and password.

UK / EU undergraduate students

We don't have any availability for 2019-20. However, you can apply via the waiting list when this opens in September 2019, or if you want to secure accommodation early in the private sector, contact SU Homes.

Postgraduate students

In order to apply you must be a fully registered, full-time postgraduate student and continuing your current course of study in 2019-20. If you are commencing a new course of study in 2019-20 you should apply as a new postgraduate student when new student applications open on 8 January 2019.

The accommodation application deadline is 5pm on Friday 11 January 2019.

Unable to secure University accommodation

If you're unable to secure University accommodation you have the option to live locally in privately owned rental properties. The Students' Union's house-finding service SU Homes will be able to help you find the perfect place to live.

SU Advice can offer information about tenant rights and responsibilities, about repairs, repossession, eviction, harassment by landlords, contracts, deposits and much more.

Intermitting students

If you have withdrawn temporarily from Essex (intermitted) during the first term of the first year of study and decide to return the following academic year, you may re-apply for accommodation.

How to apply

Contact us in January of the year in which you intend to return to your studies.

If you're an overseas (non EU) undergraduate, you're guaranteed accommodation if you apply by the deadline and started your course before 2018-19. If you started your course in 2018-19 and want to apply for returning accommodation for 2019-20, we can't guarantee accommodation but anticipate good availability.

If you're a UK/EU undergraduate student or a postgraduate student, we can't guarantee accommodation but anticipate good availability.

If you are applying for a new course or if you have completed the East 15 Theatre Arts Foundation and have been successful in getting a place on one of their degree programmes, you will need to apply as a new student.

Promotional offer

If you apply by 5pm on Friday 11 January 2019, you'll be eligible for one of our promotional offers below. You can apply after the date above, but you won't qualify for any of the promotions.

The cashback from the promotion will be credited to your account at the end of the first term (December 2018).

All of our accommodation is charged on a nightly basis so the rates below may vary slightly. These promotions aren't available for studio accommodation.

  • Returning student offer - one year deal

    As a returning student applying by the deadline date you'll automatically receive £200 credit-back.

    • Weekly rate: £148.05
    • Annual rate*: £6,196.95 (inclusive of credit-back offer)

    *Based on a standard 42 week contract.

  • Returning student offer - two year deal

    To save even more money you could sign up to our two year deal and benefit from a lower rental rate frozen for the term of your contract. You will also receive free summer accommodation.

    The rent will be at the following rates:

    • weekly rate: £143.92
    • annual rate*: 6,024.08
    • overall saving: £531.65

    *Based on a standard 42 week contract.

  • Returning student - for students finishing a 2 year deal in 2019

    As a valued customer at University Square, if you apply for accommodation by the deadline date, you'll automatically receive a loyalty bonus of £500 credit-back. You will also receive free summer accommodation.

    Your rent will be:

    • weekly rate: £148.05
    • annual rate*: £6,196.95 (inclusive of credit-back offer)

    *Based on a standard 42 week contract.

South Essex College students

We have rooms available for South Essex College students at University Square.

Make an application by 5pm on Friday 11 January 2019 to take advantage of our promotional offers below. Applications can be made after this date but will not qualify for any of the promotions.

Payment

When you receive an accommodation offer you have one week to accept and pay your £250 prepayment. You will be able to make this payment by credit/debit card as part of the online acceptance process.

Colchester Campus

If you are not able to pay your pre-payment at the point of acceptance, please contact the Student Information Team in the Student Services Hub. Please do not try and pay your pre-payment via the student online payment system. We have experienced difficulty tracing such payments in the past and this option has therefore been discontinued.

Southend Campus

Terms and conditions

If you accept your accommodation offer you will be entering into a legal contract with Accommodation Essex and you will be liable to pay the rent for your room for the period stated on your offer letter.

Returning Study Abroad students

If you are a returning undergraduate Study Abroad student, but have overseas status and started your course before the 2018-19 academic year, you are eligible to apply for guaranteed accommodation via the returning applications process, which opens in November and closes in January. You will need to apply in the November of your year abroad and this can be done online. If you do not apply then, you will have to apply online when the waiting list opens in September. This will not be guaranteed accommodation but you will be a priority above other returning students on the waiting list.

If you are an an overseas status student and start your course from 2018-19, or are an EU/UK returning Study Abroad student, you will have to apply online when the waiting list opens in September. This will not be guaranteed accommodation but you will be priority above other returning students on the waiting list.
